Rob at a glance:
Where were you born? Calgary, AB
Kids? 4 year old daughter
What Church are you at? Gospel Chapel
How long have you been there? 4 months
Q: What’s your favorite city to visit?
A: Wellington, New Zealand is definitely my favourite city to visit! I lived there for 7 months when I first got involved with youth ministry (during my year overseas), and there is so much spiritual depth and history there for me personally. Also, so many old friends who I would love to catch up with again!
Q: Favorite Movie?
A: I would have to go with Inside Man or Guardians of the Galaxy. Both excellent, and the type of movies you can watch over and over again.
Q: Favorite Youth Ministry moment?
A: We just started in ministry a few months ago, so there isn’t a huge bank of memories, but it has been incredible. I think my favourite moments are always seeing young people genuinely encounter Jesus, and faith going from the head to the heart. Nothing like it.
Q: What’s your least favorite fast food joint?
A: I don’t think I have ever been asked this question before. I have obviously found the best thing from each one and rarely deviate from that, but if I had to pick one I would have to say Taco Time.
Q: Any pet peeves?
A: Being woken up suddenly. I like my time in the mornings =D
Q: What’s the biggest mistake you ever made in ministry? What’d you learn?
A: Especially at the beginning my biggest mistake would be expecting everything to go perfectly, and carrying the weight and responsibility of events on my shoulders. I learned that without the team it is impossible, God has got it all and it isn’t on me to carry it all.
Q: What do you enjoy doing outside of youth pastoring?
A: I spend the majority of my time with my family, but when i am not, personal quiet things always feed me. For example reading, journaling and being in nature. Otherwise I enjoy traveling, sports, snowboarding, fishing and camping.
Q: What’s the best event you’ve ever done with students?
A: My favourite event we have done so far was a Murder Mystery night. We did it themed after an 80s homecoming. We wrote the whole script, 60+ characters for the youth and even an air band rock show. Everyone dressed up and it was amazing!
Q: What’s your biggest ministry struggle at the moment?
A: For us the last months have been a bit crazy, with having no experience or structure to work with, it has been very stretching! Trusting the vision we feel from God and moving toward that confidently in the position even if it isn’t comfortable. That hasn’t come easy but has been so rewarding! I think balancing family, personal life, marriage, my own relationship with God, and ministry will never be perfect but needs to be priority!
Q: If you could gather all the youth pastors in our province in a room, what would you want to say to them?
A: The impact you have in these young peoples’ lives is so much more than you could ever understand or will ever hear about from them. Give your whole hearts, keep balance in life, and don’t do it for the numbers or to get noticed. That will come. Give as much of yourself now to what you have, as you would if there was thousands in front of you. Be faithful with what God has entrusted to you and trust His process.
Q: Is there something that the youth pastors of the province can be praying towards for you?
A: Learn to Love better. Also, hunger for more of Him, to never settle or be complacent, for the grace, strength and favor to be all that God is calling us to be in this season, and also wisdom to hear and know what direction to take things as this is all new to us!
