Youth Pastor Spotlight: Jeff Locke

  1. What’s your full name?Jeffrey James Scott Locke
  2. Do you have any nick names? The Lockeness Monster
  3. Where did you grow up?I grew up in Trenton Ontario and moved to Calgary when I was 10.
  4. What’s your favorite movie show of all time? Braveheart.
  5. Do you remember when and where you were called to ministry? Yes! I started in ministry as  an interim youth pastor just filling in for the summer until they could find someone full time for the church. I was going to go into sales. It became quite evident as I filled in that summer that the Lord was calling me into full-time ministry.
  6. What’s the biggest mistake you ever made in ministry that you look back at and laugh now?Well, before I became the Youth Pastor at the church I am at now I was a youth leader. I may or may not have sprayed a student from the bottom of his pant leg to his shoulder with axe and lit a match…… What was I thinking! Don't worry no one was hurt:).
  7. Have you ever lost a student at an event/camp/retreat?Not yet:)
  8. What do you enjoy doing outside of youth ministry?I love playing soccer every Monday night, going on vacation and hanging out with family friends.
  9. What’s the worst injury that’s happened to a student at youth group? It has all been pretty tame the past few years but we have had a couple dislocated thumbs, a broken ankle, and arm.
  10. Yea or nay to all-nighters?Nay! All nighters are the worst, and my leaders hate me for them! I'm good with over-nighters where some sleep is involved, but definitely a no for me on the all-nighters!
  11. What’s the hardest part of being a youth pastor?I love being a youth pastor. But sometimes you wonder if what you're doing matters. Youth pastors put their full heart and soul into their ministry and everything we have to offer is invested. So, sometimes you wonder, are kids growing? is this sermon I'm preparing making a difference? does the work I'm doing even matter? These thoughts can be a hard part of ministry. You really want to see students lives radically changed in a deep relationship with Christ!
  12. What’s your favorite part?My job is the best. Like really, no one has a cooler job than a youth pastor! I have two favorite parts. One of my favorite parts is when you see a student “get it”. That moment when it all clicks and they understand and want to accept Jesus as their savior. Best thing ever! The second thing is having the privilege of students confiding in you and allowing you to pray over their lives. What an honor to be able to point a student to Jesus in the midst of their struggles. The fact that they would trust me enough to share their struggles and let me speak into their lives and walk through it with them. So cool!
  13. Is there anything that you’re really excited about in the near future? This Friday! Were having an event where students get to invite their non-Christian friends and a lot of them will hear the Gospel for the very first time! We are believing that we will see students accept Jesus as king of their lives!
